The Leon County Detention Facility

Tallahassee is Florida's capital city, and it is also a major university town (Florida State University, Florida A&M University). This combination creates a unique arrest profile: state government employees, college students, legislative session visitors, and a year-round residential population all pass through the same booking facility.

The Leon County Detention Facility is located at 535 Appleyard Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32304. Run by the Leon County Sheriff's Office, this is the only booking and detention facility for the county.

First Appearance Schedule: Different from Most Counties

Tallahassee has a first appearance schedule that is different from the standard you see in South Florida. Pay attention to the timing:

Most South Florida counties run first appearance hearings in the early morning or have rolling schedules. The 11:00 AM weekday start in Tallahassee means if someone is arrested at 2:00 AM on a Tuesday, they will not see a judge until 11:00 AM that day at the earliest. If arrested Tuesday evening, first appearance might not happen until 11:00 AM Wednesday.

The Supervised Pretrial Release Program (SPRP)

The 2nd Judicial Circuit operates a Supervised Pretrial Release Program that is more active in Tallahassee than similar programs in many larger Florida counties. SPRP offers an alternative to monetary bail: eligible defendants can be released under supervision conditions set by the first appearance judge.

SPRP conditions typically include regular check-ins, drug testing, travel restrictions, and curfews. This program is particularly relevant for FSU and FAMU students who may not have the financial resources to post bail but have strong community ties through their university enrollment.

However, SPRP is not available for all charges. Domestic violence, serious felonies, and cases involving firearms generally require traditional monetary bail.

College Student Arrests in Tallahassee

With two major universities, Tallahassee sees a disproportionate number of arrests involving college students, particularly around football game weekends, homecoming, and the first weeks of each semester. Common charges include underage possession of alcohol, DUI, trespass, and disorderly conduct.

For students, the consequences of a conviction extend beyond the criminal case. University disciplinary proceedings, financial aid impacts, and professional licensing complications (for students in education, nursing, or law programs) can all follow. Getting out of jail quickly and connecting with a defense attorney who understands both the criminal and academic consequences is important.
