Miami Beach is a separate city from Miami, with its own police department (MBPD). MBPD is one of the busiest police departments in Florida, patrolling South Beach, Mid-Beach, and North Beach. All Miami Beach arrests transport across the causeway to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) on the mainland. The transport takes 30-45 minutes depending on causeway traffic.
The South Beach entertainment district along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue generates one of the highest arrest volumes per square mile in Florida. Spring break, Art Basel (December), Ultra Music Festival (March), and year-round nightclub activity create a constant flow of DUI, drug possession, battery, and disorderly conduct arrests. Every Miami Beach arrest requires transport across one of the causeways (MacArthur, Julia Tuttle, or 79th Street) to reach TGK on the mainland. During peak traffic hours, especially Friday and Saturday evenings when nightlife is ramping up and the causeways are congested, transport can take 45 minutes or more. The person will not appear in the MDPD inmate search system until after they arrive and are processed at TGK.
Art Basel Miami Beach (December) and Ultra Music Festival (March) each draw over 100,000 attendees and generate concentrated arrest activity. During these events, MBPD deploys additional officers, and the booking queue at TGK backs up. If someone is arrested during Art Basel week or Ultra weekend, expect release times to be significantly longer than a normal week. Plan accordingly.
